Swedish request for help regarding ignition

Bericht door stoffe2000 »

Hallo, it´s such a shame i don´t know your wonderful language. I guess this place is a goldmine if one just understands what you're saying :)

I have a HY78, and i know nothing about the ignition but i can tell that it needs adjustments. I guess i have to see the flywheel to be able to adjust it? There should be some marks that tells me about the "turning point" right?

If anyone has some intstruction to give me that helps me adjusting the ignition i would be so gratetful. We're not that many with those cars in Sweden you know..

Best Regards / Kristoffer

Ignition

Bericht door Zijderveld »

Greetings Kristoffer,

Me knew nothing about ignition as well, but recently I have been trying to get the 123-ignition in and since that time I'm learning a lot.

What I know, I can try to get accros to you. The steps below are for adjusting the time when the ignition will take place.

Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong

* One point is that your motor should stand for the ignition point of the first cylinder before you start adjusting. (There is a 6 mm hole in your gearbox on the righthand side to make sure) Turn the motor by hand!

* the flywheel (octane regulator) should stand in the middle, with the thingy pointing down.

* Hopefully you have a special control-lamp special for this purpose (I don't know the name right now, but maybe somebody else does). Put this control lamp between the minus pole of your accu and the condensator on your ignition.

* losen the nut, with which the ignition is kept in its place, so that it is not turning

* Slowly turn the ignition house counter clockwise untill the control lamp starts burning. This is the moment that the contactpoints (in the ignition) starts to open and ignition will take place.

* Tighten in this position the nut again

BE SURE THAT THE 6 MM PEN HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE GEARBOX BEFORE YOU START

If everything is well you should now be ready to make a test start.

Good luck,
Pim Zijderveld

Thank you Pim!

Your description was very instructive, the main thing i've learned from you is that i have no use for my stroboscope. This is supposed to be done the old fashion way with the engine turned of. It sounds quite much like adjusting the ignition on my moped. Thank you so much!

Does the 123-ignition works as good as they say (in the advertises)?

You can use your stroboscope if you make a mark on the lower pulley on the front of the engine oponet to a (home made) steady pointer (a bit of metal foldet towards the pulley for example)

If you make the mark when the timepin is in the flywheelhole you can see what the engine does when its running with your strobo

Ignition and stroboscoop

Bericht door Zijderveld »

Whehey,

Concerning the 123-ignition. The stories I read (and hear) are very positive. I still have to drive for the first time and that'll be somewhere next week. So my experience with it has to wait.

How do you do that with a strobo ? What external part of the engine is it that's turning with the motor ? I presume as well you still have to turn the ignition house for setting the correct ignition time or ? Maybe these are silly questions, but i've never seen it, so it's a bit hard for me to imagine how it's done.

Greetings, Pim

Hi Pim! I do look forward to hear your comments on the 123-thing...

No, it´s of course not a silly question. In some cars (my old Saab for example) there are marks at the flywheel but also a mark at some part of the engine that does not move.

As well you know (from the discoteque) the stroboscope gives a very distinkt light, short flashes with complete darkness in betwen. If one connect this strobe to the distributor in about the same way as you described to me regarding the test-lamp, the strobe will flash every time the switch in the distributor opens (as you told me)

With the engine running you now adjust the ignition by turning the distributor one way or another until the flash from the strobe is lit exactly at the same time as the mark on the flywheel passes the mark on the engine block...

This procedure was what i had in mind when posting my question, but i did not find any marks or other clues...

I will use your method first though. And then i'll start fighting and learning about the carburator... I´m really a rookie at this!

Right, do you have any idea about the switch gap in the distributor?

(soon you don´t have to bother - i know..)

switch gap

Bericht door Zijderveld »

Hey Kristopher,

OK, cheers. It's coming more into view now. But if the ignition is way out of time, a strobo won't help you because you won't get the spark to get the motor running in the first place. Or ?

Concerning the switch gap in the distributor, I presume you mean the gap between the contact points in the ignition house ? If so I read somewhere it should be: 0.4 mm. If you mean something else, it's probably not 0.4 mm

Concerning the experience with the 123; I'm curious as well. :D

The carburator is the thing on the side of the engine ? I'll probably start learning when I'll have a problem with it.

Hey Pim, right - that´s what i meant. And right - you do need to adjust the ignition roughly before using the strobe. In this case i will use the your method (from now on i will always refere to it as the Time-Pin-Pim-Pen-Method..) and then maybe check what it looks like with the stroboscope (for fun).

The carburator is the other thing on my car that i actually have to know anything about to be able to fix it. Until now i've only fixed things that one need to know nothing about to fix..

How old is your car by the way? And do you know which carburator you have? I have one of those webers..

Carburator ?

Bericht door Zijderveld »

Hey Kristopher,

My car is from 1970, so a bit older than yours. But if the carburator is that old as well, I wouldn't know. As well as it's brand. Lately I found a part with 'made in Hong Kong' on it, so the carburator could be it as well.

Hi, no - the´re exacltly the same age. 78 is part of the model number and has something to do with the size of the engine (if thats what confused yuo) but the car is from 1970...

6 mm hole

Bericht door Zijderveld »

Hey Kristoffer,

It is on the right side on the gearbox. If you start by the handbreak. and on the connection below there is the hole where a 6 mm pen in will fit.

See below for the overview picture:

Afbeelding

And the exact location is where in the picture below is the bolt. (that's my 6 mm pen)

With these two pictures you might hopefully find it.

By the way. I've driven already a bit with my HY and the 123, and i'd say it definitely is already a succes. But further this week I'll give it a thorough try-out in some small mountains ... (Concidering Holland tha's already everything above 30 meters.)

Good luck,
Pim

(I'm not sure, the pictures will succeed, but i'll send them also via email
