k....OZALJ: 12 meeting of CITROEN CLUB CROATIA
Ozalj is a town in central Croatia, located north of Karlovac and southwest of Jastrebarsko, on the Kupa river. It has a population of 1,164, with a total of 7,932 people in the municipality (census 2001). It is surrounded by numerous villages, the most notable of which are Jaškovo (516), Vrhovac (372), Polje Ozaljsko (341), Slapno (339) and Podbrežje (332).
Ozalj is close to Žumberak in the north and the border with Slovenia in the northwest, with Metlika being the closest Slovenian town.
The town was built on a cliff over the Kupa river and the first mention of it dates from 1244, as a free royal town. The Frankopan family owned it since 1398, then it passed to the Zrinski family in 1550, and it stayed theirs until 1671. The city commemorates April 30th as its day, in memory of the event in 1671 when Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan were executed.

he town got its name from the Slovenian Count's Ozalj who's original castle stood on the site of the present Castle but had been destroyed in the early 1200s by Hungarians attacks and the Ozalj family a Slovenian people and the area occupied by a Slovenian tribe intermixed with the Croatian peoples And in the 1500s joined by Hungarians, Germanic peoples even some Belgians settled in the area.
